F1inSchools Regionals

Last week the junior (Slipstream Racing) and senior team (Ignition Racing) from Donabate Community College took part in the F1in Schools national finals. These regionals were held in Griffith College as will the nationals on the 30th of April. On the day both teams did the school very proud and at a glance their displays looked exceptional.

For those that may not be aware of the competition: the f1 in schools challenge is a nationwide event which ultimately leads to an international event when schools get the chance to race against other countries from around the world. This year the world finals take place in Texas, USA. Students design, manufacture and race scaled Co2 powered cars.

The Slipstream team consists of six dedicated second year students that have spent many hours over the past number of months staying back after school to work on the project. Conor Bolton is the team Manager and I.C.T engineer, Khalid Kamil is the teams Design Engineer, Matthew Wright is the Marketing Manager, Manus Doorley is the design and resource manager, Oisin Dineen is the Graphic Designer and Bernard Hollands is the Manufacturing Engineer.  On Thursday the 7th March 2013, the team competed in the Regional stage of the tournament. “We did very well in all aspects of the tournament and we were the only junior team to go through to the National stage on the day we competed on. We also achieved the fastest car award on the day.” said Conor, the team’s manager.

The team have a lot to improve on for the National Finals which will be held on the 30th April 2013. “We are looking for the easiest way to take weight off the car to make it as fast as possible, but we also have to keep the weight restrictions in mind” said Khalid, Slipstream’s Design Engineer.

“Our team will need as many sponsors as possible to cover all the costs required to prepare for the tournament” said Matthew, Slipstream Racings Marketing manager. He also said “We would like to say a big thank you to all our sponsors to date, General Motors, Fkawi Racing, Vodafone and Munster Motorsport”. “I would like to thank Mr.Ganly, Mr. McDermott, Mr. Clarke and Mr. English on behalf of the team for all their help up to date” said Conor Bolton, the team manager.

After the excitement of topping their category at the regional finals the team have already begun work on improving their car, building a new pit display, revamping their website and recruiting additional sponsors. The next few weeks and the Easter break will be busy for Slipstream but one last push will hopefully see them over the finish line!
