On Wednesday 26th March we held our 3rd annual Global Health and Education Day at Donabate Community College for Transition Year students. As always it was a huge success and students had a most enjoyable day and learned a lot about development issues globally through a series of workshops and presentations facilitated by Nadine Ferris France from the student outreach group for the Irish Forum for Global Health and by Fiona Larkan and her team of students from the Masters in Global Health Programme in Trinity College.

We were also delighted to welcome Michelle, Jen and Jacinta from Trocaire who facilitiated a workshop based on the ‘Facing AIDS’ exhibition we currently have on display at the school.

Thanks go also to  Colm Byrne and Michael Garvey from DPETNS who also facilitated on the day and we look forward to sending over some of our TY students to facilitate the workshops in the primary school in the near future.

In the afternoon students debated the motion that ‘People in the developing world do not have the possibility of a decent standard of health’. The motion was carried and the successful team will visit the Royal College of Surgeons and Trinity College Dublin as their prize. Well done to Tom Knightly, Sadhbh MacLochlainn, Anna Doran and Chelsea Reid and to their opponents Michelle Butler, Amy Weinmann, Anna Doran and Sinead Lithgow.

Well done also to Stephen Tol and Amy Markey on their presentation on the learning outcomes from the day.

Well done to all students who have been widely complimented by all the facilitators on their participation, enthusiasm and engagement on the issues of development. They did Donabate Community College and themselves proud! Many thanks to Ms. Lowry for her hard work and time in co-ordinating the Day.
