How quickly time flies. Six years ago in 2008, students from Donabate/ Portrane entered into the unknown territory of Donabate Community College. Just a short few years later and as the class of 2014 graduate, they are stepping into more unknown territory – life beyond post-primary school. Being the first year group to graduate from the school was always going to be special – however, the Graduating Ceremony held in the school last week demonstrated the lessons the students have learnt over their time at Donabate Community College. They have learned that preparation is key, there is no substitute to hard work and that you get out of life what you put in.

The ceremony began with a procession of the graduating classes to the applause of their proud parents, and an Awards Ceremony. Sixth Year Student of the Year was presented to Eoin Hoey. Gavin Simpson was presented with no fewer than three awards – Best Leaving Certificate Engineering Project, the Physics Award and the Maths Award. The Senior Technology Award went to Niall Wall. Hannah Keelan received the Home Economics Award while James Garcia and Molly McDonnell received the Music Award.

Students then received their graduating certificates from Mr. Creevey and their tutors. Mr. McCormack and Ms Whelan spoke about the sixth year group and gave some advice on what the next chapter of life may bring. Chris Johnston and Rebecca Woods spoke on behalf of the students – reflecting on friends made, lessons learned and hopes for the future. Mr Creevey and Mrs. Flynn addressed those present – congratulating students on their success and wished them luck in their exams. Susan Quinn, Chairperson of the Parent’s Council, congratulated all students and thanked all those who had helped to decorate the hall. A special mention of thanks must go to Mrs. McDonnell for her hard work in decorating the hall.

Sixth year music students provided musical interlude throughout the evening, while all students took to the stage to perform a final song, ‘I’ll Be There For You’. A reception took place after the ceremony which was kindly hosted by the Parents’ Council. Thanks to all the students, their parents and all who assisted in organising the Ceremony. Thanks to Mr Cummins for all his hard work over the last number of weeks with the organising committee.

Congratulations to the 2014 Graduating Class and we wish them all the very best of luck with their upcoming exams.
