We sat with Kila O’Donoghue, Elle Delaney and Anastasia Berdnikova who got through to the Junk Kouture Dublin Regional finals. They told us all about their experience from start to finish.

‘Originally we had the idea to make a Celtic Warrior inspired dress, but then we saw Lady Gaga’s triangle dress and we loved the idea of using triangles’. The girl’s triangle covered dress was called ‘Triangulation’, and was modelled by Kila on the day of the competition. Lady Gaga’s song ‘Bad Romance’ was playing in the background as she performed on the runway.

The contestants got creative with their dress, using many upcycled materials such as old folders, cardboard boxes, a hula hoop and even a yoga mat. ‘We used a lot of cardboard to make the triangles for the dress. We got the boxes from Supervalu’. The contestants used resources from the school, such as Junior Cert art folders from previous years. Ms. Bolger helped the girls in finding the correct materials to use.

The girls had a lot to say about their day at the Helix, where the competition was held. Their day started at 10 where they registered and received goodie bags. ‘After registration we went to our dressing rooms and started doing Kila’s hair and makeup’. All contestants then gathered and were told the rules of the competition, along with a rundown of the day. The show’s dress rehearsal was at two and the real show happened at seven. The girls’ dress looked amazing on stage, and their performance was brilliant.

When asked would they enter the competition again next year, the girls said that ‘We would definitely do it again and would recommend it in a heartbeat to next year’s TY’s. It was the highlight of the year for us.’ Some advice the girls gave to anyone entering the competition in the future is to ‘Put a lot of work in from the start, there’s a lot more work involved than you might think. Try not be so nervous, it’s meant to be fun.’

Congratulations to the girls for reaching this point in the competition, and thank you to Ms. Bolger for helping the girls create their amazing dress.
