On Monday 12th September, Donabate Community College held the annual Open Night for future first year students. Mr. Creevey invited sixth class students from the local community to our school to see the different subjects that DCC has to offer.

The night commenced with Mr. Creevey making a speech to the students and their parents, welcoming them to the school. Following Mr. Creevey’s speech, Lynda Drysdale, chairperson of the parents council, talked to the students about their futures as they join secondary school. Subsequent to Lynda Drysdale’s talk, a TY student named Julian Nolan delivered an outstanding speech on his experiences in DCC. The sixth class students continued on a tour around the school which was led by tour guides in all different year groups.

On the tour the students were taken around the whole entire school so they could see all of the facilities that are available. Some of the day amenities that were on show were the ICT rooms, Music room, Art room, Technology room and Woodwork room. The teachers had set out work of previous Junior Certificate students in the rooms so the sixth class students could get a good idea of what they would be doing if they pick those subjects. They also got to see the new technology that had been set up in the ICT room.

The students got to experience what secondary school life is like in DCC. In the science labs they demonstrated experiments, such as setting their hands on fire and checking their pulses. In the Irish room they laid out Irish books and had a sweet buffet on display. Also, in the business room, a “Guess the Logo” game was set up. All of these amazing rooms that were set up by the teachers and students contributed to the cheerful and lively atmosphere that could be felt throughout the school.

Whilst going around the school we asked some students what their favourite subjects were on the night. Some subjects in particular that students seemed to like enjoy were Home Economics, Science and Art. The feedback we received from students and parents was highly enthusiastic. One student said “I thought all of the teachers were nice and friendly”. While one parents said that they thought that the tour guides were “extremely helpful”.

Overall, the night was a complete success and all of the sixth class students seemed excited and hopeful to start in DCC in the new school year. We hope that everyone had a great time and we look forward to seeing the future first years very soon and we wish them the best of luck as they start their new journey in DCC.
