The Student Council is a great way to involve the students into school affairs. It is a group of representatives who come together to discuss problems suggested by students in the school. While interviewing previous Student Council members, we discovered that they conducted meetings every second Tuesday. Ms. Orohoe and Ms. Clery work with the Student Council to discuss issues of concern for students and bring them to Mr. Creevey’s attention.

The Student Council work together collectively with school staff to find solutions for the issues at hand and as the Student Council Elections are coming up, you have an opportunity to become involved.  Many underlying matters have been discussed and changed in the past. For example, the rearranging of the lunch times, allowing female students to wear trousers and the plan to provide a kettle and a microwave to the students were some requests brought up by the Student Council.

Not all ideas are accepted when brought to the Council, but last year the choice for female students to wear either a skirt or trousers was implemented. The Student Council acts as the student voice in school affairs. It has made students’ issues noticed and many problems have been solved as a result of the Student Council.

Every year, one girl and one boy are nominated from each year group to have a chance to be on the Student Council. The boy and the girl with the most votes from each year will become representatives of their peers and part of the Student Council. Because of the significance of these elections, it is crucial to vote correctly. Instead of choosing a friend or someone popular, please attempt to vote for someone who will represent you well. For example, someone with good teamwork skills, leadership skills, problem solving skills and the ability to speak in front of a crowd would be a great choice to place your vote.

Running for the Student Council is also very important and highly encouraged if you think you have any of these traits. Being involved means you have the opportunity to raise issues discussed by your peers, implement new rules and advance the school as a whole. The Student Council elections also teaches the system of voting and democracy to students, which would be important for national elections in the future. It can also be very useful as participating in the Student Council will be seen on your CV.

The voting will commence on the 29th of September in classrooms B36 and B37.

Best of luck to the nominees and make sure to use your vote wisely!
