On the 5th of November, the Senior Ladies Gaelic football team had their first match against Balbriggan. The match took place in St Pats’ grounds giving the girls the advantage of playing at home. However, with only 11 players fit to play, there had to be quick changes made to the game plan. Missing their original goal keeper, Clódagh Read stood up to the challenge of playing in goals and excelled in a position she was not used to playing.

The match started off with Donabate winning the throw in, giving us an immediate boost. The team played with such teamwork from the beginning and within minutes the first goal was scored by Alison Wall (4th Year). Balbriggan fought back and continued pushing the Donabate girls to their limit. Donabate were continuing their good play when Alex Ryan (4th Year) found the back of the Balbriggan net twice. Within the first half scores were seen by Alison, Alex, Roisín and Niamh. Determination and passion was shown by all girls on the panel and by the end of the first half Donabate were winning with a score of 3 goals and 6 points Balbriggan having scored 2 points.

The second half began with a few changes; Alex Ryan was now in goals with Clódagh staying in the full back line. Maria Carr was now playing in the forward line having played in the full back line for the first half. Balbriggan came back fighting and scored a goal within minutes of the whistle starting the 2nd half of the match. A free was awarded to the Donabate girls, Alison Wall scoring a point from this. The second half of the match showed determination from both sides with Balbriggan scoring three more goals and two points.
Fortunately for us, the DCC girls didn’t drop their heads and kept going, ignoring how tired they were. Scores were seen by Lia Kenny, Emma Byrne and Roisín Rainey (all 6th Year), Maria Carr, Niamh Byrne and Alison Wall (all 4th Year). 5 more goals were scored from the Donabate girls along with 4 points throughout the second half.

The final score of the Senior Ladies first match was 8-10 to 4-04 to DCC. Thank you to the coaches Mr Weafer and Ms Hennessy for coaching the team. Well done girls! Good luck moving forward in the next round!
