There are whisperings on the corridors. Nods and grins as the members of the senior soccer team move from class to class. This morning, TY Journalists, Killian McKeon and Seán Collins got the opportunity to speak to Senior soccer manager Mr. Clarke ahead of next week’s big game.

Q. Were you confident of the team before you played the matches?

I was very confident in the ability of the players and the structure of the team where we have no weak positions. Last year we didn’t take our chances and this slightly worried me but after our 10 – 0 victory over Chlor na Mora in the first game, I knew they could fulfill their potential.

Q. Do you feel the team has improved through the progression of the tournament?

We have become a very solid side and conceded very few chances through great teamwork, a strong bond and brilliant communication amongst the players. Players that have been introduced such as Dylan Geoghegan and Kieran Conroy are getting stronger and more confident in every game, which makes us a stronger outfit.

Q. How much confidence do you have in the players?

I have complete confidence in the lads. They have been fully committed and their technical ability is better than I have ever seen at this age. It is a special group of players. With their attitude, their ability and some luck on the day we can go far.

Q. Did the semi-final show a different side to the squad?

The semi final showed me that they have patience and bottle. Unlike previous games, neither team gave anything away. Both goals were from set pieces. They were patient though throughout in a tense game. The tension in the penalty shootout was palpable and everyone who stepped up showed great courage.

Q. Who are the players that have impressed you the most?

They are a team and they work for each other. Mark McMahon is sensational in the middle of the park. His link up with Sam Carroll is football at its best. Cormac Burke is rock solid in the centre of the defence – he could lead men to war. We have Jeff Nwodo as well who apparently hasn’t lost the ball since he was seven. Every player on the bench could easily start. All have come on and contributed to each game. I am particularly excited to have Callum Leonard to return to the fold.

Q. Are you looking forward to the final?

Absolutely. Mr. Creevey is sending a bus full of supporters. He’s more excited than any of us. There is huge excitement through the school and the community. The lads are loving it. It is going to be a competitive match and it’s being played in Oriel Park, the home of the best football team in Ireland, a fitting venue.

Oriel Park, Wednesday 23rd January, kick-off 11am. All supporters are welcome.
