Over the course of transition year, a group of students have been taking part in a leadership programme called Foroige. This is the first time that Foroige has taken place in our school and hopefully not the last! Not only have we built on our leadership skills but we have also grown as individuals throughout the two modules completed.

Our mentor, Bryan Gavin, met with a small group of us every Monday for two hours. Within those two hours we did confidence-building exercises, leadership skill workshops and we learned how to work together as a team efficiently and successfully. Although Foroige took place in the school library, Bryan had to remind us frequently that Foroige is not a normal class. He explained to us that in order to move forward in this programme we must open ourselves up to new challenges and not be stuck in the rigid structure of school.

Throughout the year the group completed two modules. The first module focused on building personal skills like listening, presentation and self awareness. All of these skills we learned, helped us become better leaders and better people. We carried these skills into the second module which was quite different to the first. At the start of the second module we were tasked with getting into groups of four and thinking of a topic to make a presentation on. There were many different topics chosen, for example abortion, child obesity, Sea World and feminism. At the end of the module each team had to give their presentation to the rest of the group. With each presentation the group learned something new about their topic, along with how to work as a valid team member.

Foroige has without a doubt helped us understand our goals better and has given us the opportunity and skills to become a well rounded leader. On behalf of the TY students, we would like to thank Bryan for all his support and hard work throughout the course. We would also like to thank Ms.Sheehan and Ms.Flynn for organising Foroige for the first time in the school. We definitely think that Foroige is really beneficial for the future TYs!
