Last week, Donabate Schools of Sanctuary club hosted an award ceremony for 3rd Year student Osaretin Ogbeide for coming 2nd in a competition to show racism the red card. We were delighted to welcome Valeria Aquino, a guest from the Immigrant Council of Ireland to present Osaretin with her prize. She spoke to us about her love for Ireland and her story about being an exchange student and deciding to stay here.
We had a wonderful presentation to start us off from our senior student Medina Salihovic where she spoke about the poster that she submitted and her inspiration behind her work. We then moved on to a PowerPoint that informed us about the harmful aspects of racism, the different types of racism and the psychological affects that it can have on an individual, made by our senior students Madoc Barnes and Conor Cullen.
We had a short ten minute break in between our ceremony to try multicultural snacks provided by the students and Ms Nyamuranga. We then listened to a short and sweet poem from our junior students Millie Clark and Lily Majewski. Finally we moved on to our winner, Osaretin, she spoke to us about her story, Water Fountain, where a young girl feels as though she is different from everybody else due to bullying based on her appearance. The young girl eventually meets a girl called Ara who is confident and helps the young girl navigate through her thoughts and eventually puts an end to the bullying. Osaretin’s piece won 2nd place in the competition and was a good start to our morning at DCC.
Osaretin was presented with a €150 One For All voucher, an art cert and a certificate by Valeria.
Congratulations Osaretin, we are very proud of you!
