Congratulations to the DCC Philosophy Club who were successful again yesterday at Irish Young Philosopher Awards Final and were fortunate to meet with President Michael D Higgins.

Congratulations to 5th Year Student Cian Smart on receiving 2nd place in the Senior category for his project titled ‘Fake News and Alternative Fact’ – Separating fact from fiction in a ‘post-truth’ world. Cian received his award from Senator Mary Alice Higgins in UCD on Wednesday.

This was the second year of the awards with over 400 entries from all around Ireland. Eight students represented our school with fantastic projects based on challenging and deep philosophical questions and issues that were of interest to them.

President Michael D. Higgins gave an address to the packed O’Reilly Hall in UCD in which he explained “Philosophy encourages our primary and secondary school pupils to think creatively and humanely around the critical issues and challenges that face our society today was, therefore, a greatly welcome development and one to which so many of our young people and educators have responded positively and with great vision. I so thank them and congratulate them. The range of topics covered, and questions asked is quite astounding and greatly impressive.”

After the presentation, students from Donabate Community College got to meet with President Higgins to explain our Philosophy Club and he was delighted to hear the interest that our students have in the subject.
