You may have seen it across our social media sites this week, but there has been a lot of attention on females in sport. That’s due to it being International Women in Sport Week – All in the build up to International Women’s Day this Sunday.
On our social channels, each day, we have done something slightly different to celebrate the many fantastic women in sport across our school community, both past and present.
The focus was on gathering a small sample of students, staff and DCC Alumni to answer some questions from our TY journalists, Tom, Cillan, Samuel and Ryan.
The questions were;
1) What sport do you play/have you played?
2) Why did you start this sport?
3) Biggest achievement in sport?
4) Favourite memories from your sporting life?
On Monday, four of our current students were happy to answer the questions and get a photo together in the courtyard, the students were Carlie Sinnott (5th Year), Zara King (5th Year), Alice Maher (2nd Year), and Sophia Palmane (4th Year).
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the focus shifted to staff, where just some of our amazing staff members sent us action shots of them playing sport and answered the same questions. Thank you to staff members Chroidhia Myers, Breda Orohoe, Jenna Melvin, Rossa Gallagher, Sinéad Kearns, Leah Fox, Gemma Fitzsimons, and Eimear Davis for taking part.
We had two separate posts up on Thursday to commemorate, and it focused on our DCC Alumni. Firstly, we delved deep into the hard drives to find some of the original female sports teams in the school, dating all the way back to 2012, when Ms Clery led her senior LGFA charges out for battle in our now ‘old’ jerseys – These can still be found on site in the school! Although very rarely used these days. Some of the other teams involved in this ‘Throwback Thursday’ post were the senior soccer and hockey teams, as well as some basketball awards from 2014.
We finished Thursday with a further two posts, focusing on four of our amazing past pupils, who like the staff and students, answered the TY questions, and sent us some of their action shots. Thanks to past pupils Kailey Berrigan (who worked with us last year!), Niamh Neville, Emma Blount and Ellen Kirwan for their time!
On Friday, to finish up the week, there will be a video posted across our social channels of our TY journalism class interviewing some teachers, asking them about their favourite female sports stars!
Thanks to everyone involved this week who made this possible, including those that reached out to our past pupils. Check out our Instagram and Facebook pages for the full photos and interviews.
