Congratulations must be given to our fantastic first year girls football team, who on Thursday, added their first silverware to their school footballing careers.
They had mostly swept all before themon the road to the final, and even though the decider itself was postponed by a week, nothing knocked their focus.
From the off, it was clear that DCC were a step above an impressive Loreto Navan team. Hannah O’Donoghue’s early pressing and interception on a centre half lead to our first goal, taken by herself. A rocket from outside the box that flew over thr keeper’s head. 1-0 after just nine minutes.
The rest of the first half was much of the same, with Donabate controlling possesion, only being denied a second by the fantatsic Navan goalkeeper, and a shot off the upright. Loreto did put some pressure on towards the end of the half however, as their sole shot on goal drilled narrowly past our post and wide.
The second half showed no change in aggression from DCC, who controlled possesion in midfield, and another couple of brilliant saves from the goalkeeper denied Hannah and Muireann Martin from adding a second. Neasa McCormack also hit the bar with a spectacular shot soon after.
A one-nil lead is always dangerous however, as Navan piled on the pressure, with their impressive number 9 leading the charges. Our defence stood firm however, and with less than ten minutes to go, O’Donoghue, who also captained the side added a second, and put the game beyond reach of Navan. 2-0 at full time.
Congratulations to the girls, who now advance to the Leinster Semi Final, where they will host New Ross on a date TBC.
