Rugby Interview with Seanan Ó’Caithin
TY Journalism students James and Eoghan spoke to Seanan recently about his rugby exploits outside of school.
What club do you play for?
Seanán told us that his current club is Malahide Rugby Club, Seanán likes playing for Malahide as his mother is from there originally, Seanán’s Malahide Team plays in Leinster Metropolitan League every Sunday mornings.
What position do you play?
Seanán plays as a flanker for Malahide, Seanán likes to play as a flanker as there is less pressure in the scrum, and because his job is to hit the rucks, which Seanán enjoys. As a flanker, Seanán has scored two tries for the school, and one for his club, Malahide.
How did you start playing rugby?
After Ireland’s defeat at the 2023 World Cup in the Quarter Final to New Zealand, Seanán was inspired to start playing rugby and realised he really enjoyed playing rugby when he joined, in February 2024, Seanán would then become the captain of the school rugby team for this year.
What is it like to be the Captain of the school team?
Seanán said that he really enjoys being the captain of the school team as he likes the responsibility of leading the team in the matches, Seanán has a great passion for rugby and said it was a great honour to be named captain of the school team.
What is your favourite moment playing rugby?
Seanán has played many important matches for club and school, and said his favourite moment was playing in his favourite stadium, Donnybrook Stadium, with the school. Seanán’s favourite match he played in was his first ever match, as he scored a try.
