Weekly Sports Review
Following the Easter break, school sport resumed with a number of important fixtures and events across the week, marking the beginning of new campaigns as well as the conclusion of others.
On Monday 13th April, activities returned with a busy schedule that included both a chess tournament in Swords and a camogie quarter-final. The chess tournament proved to be a positive outing for the students involved, with strong performances and good representation from the school. On the camogie pitch, however, it was a disappointing result for our minor team, who were beaten by Loreto Foxrock. This brought an end to what had been a very impressive campaign, having previously won all three of their group games.
Tuesday saw another challenging result, as our Transition Year boys were defeated in their cup quarter-final. Despite their efforts throughout the match, the opposition proved too strong on the day, recording an eight-goal victory. This result marks the end of the TY team’s season, though their progress to the latter stages of the competition is a credit to their work over the year.
Attention then turned to Wednesday, where our first-year girls began their Leinster campaign following their success in winning the regional league prior to the Easter break. They faced a strong side from St Mary’s Secondary School New Ross in a closely contested encounter. The match remained tight throughout, but unfortunately it was St Mary’s who claimed victory with a late winning score, leaving DCC narrowly defeated.
Thursday brought a mixed set of results. Our minor girls were narrowly beaten 0–2 in St Ita’s by a strong Confey College side, bringing their season to a close after a series of committed performances. However, there was positive news on the tennis courts, where DCC recorded an excellent victory over The King’s Hospital School, winning in straight sets. The team of Amy and Caragh O’Reilly, Kate Ovenden and Mila Downes, and Isla Gray and Zara Duke all performed strongly to secure an impressive result.
Overall, while the week brought a number of challenging results, there were also clear positives in terms of participation, effort and the continued development of teams across a range of sports.
