Home Economics

Junior Cycle: Home Economics students learn how to live a healthy lifestyle that will positively impact their health and wellbeing. Home Economics teaches students how to become informed and responsible consumers. It develops students’ creativity and design skills. Home economics develops students who are environmentally conscious and dedicated to a sustainable and responsible way of life. Home Economics draws on diverse disciplines integrating social, physical and human sciences. It strives to solve everyday challenges using a blend of knowledge and skills acquired from multiple disciplines. 

Assessment

Students will complete two CBA’s; 

  1. Creative craft project
  2. Food literacy skills brief

Students will complete;

  • Practical cookery exam (worth 50% overall grade)

Leaving Certificate: Leaving Certificate Home economics provides students with knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes necessary for managing their own lives, for further and higher education and work. 

The learning experiences in home economics develop flexibility and adaptability in students, prepare them for a consumer-oriented society and provide a learning foundation for a wide range of careers in food, textiles, science, design, social studies and tourism.

Leaving Certificate Home Economics is assessed at Higher and Ordinary levels

Students will complete;

  • Food studies Assignment booklet (worth 20% of overall grade)
